by LORD BYRON (1788-1824) A dramatic poem
Overture and incidental music by Robert Schumann with Ronald Pickup as Manfred Byron started this work in September 1816, during a tour of the Bernese Alps.
His frustration, his disastrous marriage, his sense of guilt arising from his attachment to his half-sister Augusta, his death-wish, a romantic defiance and the Alpine setting were all woven into this composition.
Over 30 years later Schumann, already in the clutches of incipient insanity, saw a kindred spirit in Manfred and in his torment over a dark nameless crime.
