Kingsley Amis looks at the work of six jazz musicians who showed particular originality.
This trumpeter, who was born in Ohio in 1906, has led his own group for much of his career. One of the most colourful products of the Chicago jazz scene of the late 20s, he has 'the cockiest, sassiest, even blowsiest trumpet style in jazz', wrote John Wilson.
