Duke Ellington (1899-1974) Edward Kennedy Ellington plays the piano but his real instrument is his band. Each member of his band is a distinctive tone-colour and set of emotions, which he mixes with others, equally distinctive, to produce a third thing which Hike to call the 'Ellington Effect'.
(BILLY STRAYHORN )
Today's programme consists of works that Ellington wrote up to 1935, including 'Black and tan fantasy', 'Creole love call', 'Mood indigo', 'Creole rhapsody', and 'Reminiscing in tempo', played by the ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA. records
