In 1891, at the age of 41, Maupassant was world-famous for his short stories and his novels, the owner of several houses and yachts, an obsessive womaniser and seemingly of robust health. Yet he was increasingly the victim of mental disorders caused by syphilis and two years later he was dead. His descent into insanity was witnessed by his valet.
