First of ten programmes The Seventh Leeds International Piano
Competition took place between 7 and 19 September this year.
Jeremy Siepmann was in Leeds during the recital stages, and over the next fortnight introduces performances given by the ten semi-finalists in Leeds Town Hall last week.

A selection from the poetry and writings of WALT WHITMAN by STEUART ALLIN , With
Whitman was born on Paumanok, that ' fish-shaped island ', and took much of his imaginative life from its surrounding shores.
These are evoked in the programme with the help of specially composed music by IAIN KENDELL which is performed by: TERRY BUSBY (clarinet) PHIL EDWARDS and TONY MCVEY (percussion)

In the last of nine programmes
Bernard Levin reports from the most northerly of all festival cities. Anchorage, where the Alaska Festival of Music provides a week of musical events including Prokofiev's
Alexander Nevsky - an apt, if ironic, choice when one recalls. as Mr Levin does, that Alaska once belonged to. Russia and was sold to the USA as recently as 1867 for only seven million dollars.
