When Bach was installed as Cantor at
Leipzig in 1723 he could have had little idea of the adverse conditions with which he would shortly have to contend. Discipline at St Thomas 's School was appalling and the Rector was well past the age of retirement. The musicians, too, were overworked and, as a result, awkward and unpredictable. All the more extraordinary, therefore. that in the midst of all this stress and discord, Bach was able to create a wealth of compositions of the very highest musical calibre. Among these were six cantatas and his original Magnificat for his first Christmas at Leipzig.
