We conductors all talk too much. We needn't be afraid of trusting the orchestra.
Never one to waste words himself, Sir Adrian Boult throughout his long career has epitomised just such economy of words and gesture, while at the same time generating an atmosphere of warmth and sympathy. The programme includes rehearsal extracts from the commercial recording of Vaughan Williams's The Pilgrim's Progress and a of Beethoven's Coriolan Ouerture, and reflections on the art of conducting by Boult himself. First in a new series of seven programmes.
When Bach was installed as Cantor at
Leipzig in 1723 he could have had little idea of the adverse conditions with which he would shortly have to contend. Discipline at St Thomas 's School was appalling and the Rector was well past the age of retirement. The musicians, too, were overworked and, as a result, awkward and unpredictable. All the more extraordinary, therefore. that in the midst of all this stress and discord, Bach was able to create a wealth of compositions of the very highest musical calibre. Among these were six cantatas and his original Magnificat for his first Christmas at Leipzig.
Cantata No 63: Christen. atzet diesen Tag
