'I completely fail to understand how the expression " ballet music " can be something disapproving':
This was Tchaikovsky's reply to his pupil Taneyev, who had tactlessly suggested there was a hint of ballet music in the Fourth Symphony. From his youth. Tchaikovsky was fascinated by music for dancing, and this week's programmes concentrate on his mastery' in this genre, both in his great ballet scores and in his operas and incidental music.
