Tim Jeal was the 1975 joint-winner of the John Llewelyn Rees Memorial Prize for his third novel Cushing's Crusade. He has written a biography of David Livingstone. His first historical novel, Until the Colours Fade. is published today. He explains why he has found the technique of writing this sort of epic more challenging and also more liberating than anything he has tackled before.
