Introduced by John Maddox
Do animals other than man show altruistic behaviour? Is it self-sacrifice that is shown when a wild dog regurgitates food not only for its own offspring, but also for all the other offspring of the pack? Is the honey bee being altruistic when it stings an intruder, an act which results in its own death? What selective advantage does such behaviour give to a species?
Dr William Hamilton , Imperial College. London, and Professor John Maynard Smith , University of Sussex, discuss the hypothesis that altruism has biological value.
