A View of Austrian Politics by Ian McIntyre Austria has been described as a ' de-politicised democracy'. ' Red ' and ' Black ' survive as party labels for Left and Right, but the political passions which erupted into civil war in the 1930s are muted. and the political scene today is characterised by a remarkable placidity.
Neutrality, part of the price paid for the state treaty in 1955, finds a domestic reflection in a constant search for consensus. Adrenalin, the Austrians seem to say, is a precious substance-why pump more than an absolute minimum into the processes of politics? Producer MICHAEL GREEN (First broadcast in the Austrian Weekend) BBC Manchester
