Sir Lennox Berkeley says:
'Tonight's Proms bring us choral music from St Augustine's and chamber music from the Round House. The choir of St John's College, Cambridge, has made a name for itself by recording 16th- and 17th-century church music, but it is also known for its excellent performances of contemporary music. The Matrix ensemble, at the Round House, is composed chiefly of wind instruments. Mozart's Adagio, K 411, is scored for two clarinets and three basset-horns. Mozart was very fond of the basset-horn, which is associated particularly with his Masonic music. We can also hear in the second concert a world premiere, that of Simon Bainbridge's People of the Dawn, a work based on American Indian creation myths.'
Bob Pegg sings his ballad sequence about a Viking abandoned on a raid on the East Coast of Yorkshire, and later journeying inland to his death. The sequence charts the history of the battle, his subsequent encounters, and the final fate of his bones. Music and penny whistle accompaniment for the ballad - which was commissioned by the Ilkley Festival for performance there in May - is by BOB PEGG. Producer GEORGE MACBETH followed by an interlude
