Richard C. Wade was Harms-worth Professor of American Institutions at Oxford University 1974-5, and is an expert on American Urban history.
He argues that racial tensions in the USA were exacerbated by the fact that white America imposed the same expectations on its black and its white immigrants while treating the two groups differently.
