Firing a pot is a necessary evil for some potters, for others it is a mystical, magical experience. Here, a wide range of potters talk about their attitudes towards firing their work and their great successes and downright disasters: raku potters talk about instant results; wood-firing potters describe teams of people stoking a kiln at 15-minute intervals over seven or more days and nights; a bone-china potter tells of the effect an earthquake had on her kiln full of exhibition work; and one potter describes the sense of being fired himself when he had to stand by and witness his whole studio and much of his life's work go up in flames.
