3/3. Humphrey Lyttelton concludes his exploration of the early British band leaders. After the Second World War, times were changing. Many band leaders had lost their musicians to the armed services, vocalists were becoming the new celebrities and the advent of television would take people away from the dancehalls. By the mid-1950s many band leaders had managed to adapt to these changes, but that was before Bill Haley, and others of his ilk, arrived from America to throw them their greatest challenge yet.

Hospital radio is a national institution in Britain. Emitting anything from football commentaries to request shows, the bedside speaker has become the patient's therapeutic friend. And it's done wonders for many a budding presenter too - from the early celebrity journalists who interviewed the Beatles before they were famous, to present-day DJs like Simon Mayo. In this programme, former volunteer and current Radio 4 presenter Carolyn Quinn traces hospital broadcasting's people and history and assesses the future of this "medicine for the ears".
