Within a year or two of its formation at the end of the Second World War, the Philharmonia became one of the world's most illustrious orchestras, working with conductors of the ilk of Toscanini, Karajan,
Furtwangler and Cantelli.
So what made the orchestra tick? To find out, Richard Baker talks to three principal players from its illustrious woodwind section of the 1950s: flautist Gareth Morris , oboist Sidney Sutcliffe and bassoonist Cecil James.
