So the poet Robert Southey called Thomas Telford , the father of civil engineering, who died 150 years ago this year. Many of his works still stand: the Menai Suspension Bridge, the Caledonian Canal, the Road to the Highlands. The son of a Scottish shepherd, Telford was poet, architect, and a man of complex personality.
Malcolm Billings traces his career and, with the help of modern-day engineers, assesses his place in the history of his profession.
(First broadcast on BBC World Service)
