Down in Britain's forests, ancient oaks and beeches are retreating before an invasion of alien spruce, larch and pine, generating a sterile world for native flowers and animals. People too find the encroaching uniformity unwelcome. But the new forests have some weighty backers in the shape of city moneymen and the Forestry Commission.
