Twenty-five years ago the Spanish poet, Garcia Lorca described New York as the 'unsleeping city'. It is still described today as the city that never sleeps. It has captivated the imagination of writers, painters and pop stars. It became the last resting place of John Lennon. This word picture is a contemporary expression of the images of New York city. One in three people in Britain today has used some form of alternative medicine and there are almost as many alternative practitioners as there are GPs. Can complementary or alternative still be regarded as fringe medicine? Why do people seek it and how are they helped by it? What is its relationship with conventional medicine? Barbara Myers investigates some of the many alternative therapies available today, only to find that there is much common ground between them and also between the people who try them.
