'I was always very lucky, because I could sell all my work. The money wasn't astronomical, but I made enough to survive and then I'd go out doing daft things like a big sculpture or a wall painting. I still play it very much on the razor's edge. I do one large commission and then have several months off to do paintings and my own ideas.'
