The Half Life of French Socialism
When France's socialists came to power in 1981 they promised radical change at every level of national life. At mid- term, economic reality and President Mitterand'e U-turn have dampened their reforming ardour, but how far have they managed to accomplish a deeper transformation? Have the old political animosities weakened in industry and local government? Is decentralisation only t pious aspiration?
