by JAMES ROOSE-EVANS In 1819 the London Theatre was fast becoming a place of artistic debauchery. It became apparent that, If theatre was to survive, the intellectual and the well-to-do had to be coaxed back. The credit for doing this belongs to Madame Vestrls , the first actress to be manager of a London Theatre, and to her successor, Marie Wilton.
