Daisy Ashford, born in 1881, was only nine years old when she wrote The Young Visiters, a miniature romance concerning Ethel, who had 'a very superier run, throwing out her legs behind and her arms swinging in rithum', and Mr Saiteena, who is 'parshial to ladles it they are nice.'
She wrote other less famous stories, with a varied cast of characters such as William, 'a tall, stout, elderly man of about 25'. But why should such a gifted child have stopped writing at 14?
Paul Vaughan discusses the stories of Daisy Ashford, recently re-published, with Marina Warner and Humphrey Carpenter.
