Fierce resistance to the Roman invasion by the Welsh, led by Caratacus, caused the Romans to build a military fortress on the Welsh border - at Wroxeter. five miles east of Shrewsbury. It developed into a city and was eventually abandoned. Excavations were started over a hundred years ago, and continue today.
