'I suppose the Maoris were burning brushwood or something. Anyway, the Captain thought it was a lighthouse, so instead of sailing round the point, we sailed slap bang into it.'

A shipwreck which Stan Hugill has never regretted, because it gave him, at the age of 15. the chance to abandon steamers and join a tall-masted sailing ship, the Saucy Kate. The last British shantyman, Stan recalls life at sea during the final days of sail, in an evening of sea stories and shanties, recorded at the Bangor Folk Festival.
