What causes cancer? This remains a mystery despite decades of effort. The reason may well be that it is caused only by a precise sequence of events. Regions of high cancer incidents such as Shanghai, where liver tumours are very common, and the Scottish Highlands, where cows suffer from an ' epidemic ' of cancer, give a handle to study how various factors in the environment can interact to produce cancer.
