John Russell Brown presents the fifth of eight programmes. Well-Made Theatre
The traditional, well-made play has lost favour as playwrights seek new ways of representing present-day realities on the stage. Some dramatists though have chosen to adapt the traditional formula to their purposes.
John Russell Brown considers five such writers: Alan Ayckbourn, Michael Frayn, Simon Gray, Joe Orton and John Whiting.

Pauline is a black woman who lives in white South Africa. She works as a domestic servant, one of the few occupations she is allowed to follow since her life is so narrowly circumscribed by the laws of apartheid. Sue MacGregor shared that life for a day, in the house of the white family for whom she works in Cape Town, and on a visit to her sister's place in a nearby black township, thousands of miles from her real home in the Transkei.
