by J.R.R. Tolkien prepared for radio in 26 episodes by Brian Sibley
Starring Ian Holm as Frodo, Michael Hordern as Gandalf, Robert Stephens as Aragorn
with Peter Woodthorpe as Gollum, William Nighy as Sam, David Collings as Legolas, Douglas Livingstone as Gimli, Richard O'Callaghan as Merry, John McAndrew as Pippin, Stephen Thorne as Treebeard and Gerard Murphy as the Narrator

A large knob-knuckled hand was laid on each of their shoulders, and they were twisted round gently but irresistibly. They found that they were looking up at a most extraordinary face. It belonged to a large Man-like, almost Troll-like, figure, at least 14-foot high, very sturdy, with a tall head, and hardly any neck. Whether it was clad in stuff like green and grey bark, or whether that was its hide, was difficult to say.'

Swans in the Hebrides
The elegant, white mute swans which grace our lakes and rivers are declining in numbers: the result of lead poisoning, collisions with power lines and disturbance during breeding. But in the Outer Hebrides an isolated group of swans, free of these dangers, is quite stable. Chris Spray takes Chris Lowell to see the wild swans of Uist.

'I am Houdini. I have been thrown into the bottomless sea, nailed inside a packing case weighed down with 200 pounds of lead. I have been buried alive in a grave six feet deep. I have always come back. And I will come back from the dead'.

Nobody can have risked death so often and so daringly as Houdini; nobody can have been so haunted by its shadow. His investigation into psychic phenomena led to his friendship with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - a friendship which was to end for Houdini in disillusion and which brought him to the very edge of madness.
