James Cameron looks at the sporting and dramatic side of Victorian life as seen and reported by staff of The Sporting Times with Harold Kasket
Fraser Kerr , Harry Landis and illustrated by contemporary songs sung by DORCAS JONES , PETER REEVES. CHARLES WEST and CHARLES YOUNG and his SINGERS AND MUSICIANS
The Sporting Times (or The Pink 'Un as it came to be known) was the raciest weekly paper of its day. To be seen reading it was a sign of real 'worldtiness'. It sent catchphrases winging through London; it enriched the Oxford Dictionary with entirely new words; it ' invented cricket's famous Ashes. With its salty gossip column and its abiding interest in the music-hall, wining, dining, and the Turf, it caught the very tang and tenor of the Naughty 90s and the brief Edwardian summer.

The sages have a hundred maps to give
That trace their crawling cosmos like a tree.
They rattle reason out through many a sieve.
That stores the sand and lets the gold go free:
And all these things are less than dust to me
Because my name is Lazarus and I live.
