In Shetland, on the last Tuesday of January each year, the people of Lerwick have a 24-hour private celebration. Based in part on Viking legend, in part on how the event has evolved over the past 100 years, this is essentially an expression of Shetland identity, limited to Shetlanders themselves, ignoring or mocking the oil 'invasion', and in no way a commercialised folk festival. Produced and presented by John Gray.

In Britain the leader of a symphony orchestra comes on to the concert platform alone and gets a round of applause all to himself. But it's the conductor who directs the orchestra's playing, so what does the leader really do - and whatever it is, how does he do it? Fritz Spiegl talks to orchestral leaders past and present to try and find out.
