Dramatised by TONY VAN DEN BERGH
Introduced by MR R. MURLEY, t.d.. President of the Royal College of Surgeons. With Leonard Maguire as John Hunter
They said it was impossible to open a throat and let a body breathe. John Hunter did just that, and my bairn lived.
A gauche, barely educated young Scot, John Hunter came to London to help his obstetrician brother William with his dissections. He proved to have such a flair for anatomy that William encouraged him to study surgery, and 23 years later he was surgeon extraordinary to George III. Today he is regarded as the founder of scientific surgery and his collection of 13,000 specimens is preserved by the Royal College of Surgeons.
