Sands: How could I agree to anything so preposterous? ... This pocket-watch was given to me by my firm as a token of their esteem after 40 long and faithful years' service. If you imagine I am going to lower it into a cup of tea simply to satisfy some moronic urge you have to compete, then you are sadly mistaken. This watch means as much to me as life itself.

The last of three programmes written by NESTA PAIN based on the biography by ELIZABETH LONGFORD with Paul Rogers as Wellington 3: The Hero Comes Home
' It's a bad thing to be always fighting. It has been too much to see brave men cutting each other to pieces.'
Wellington was 46 when he triumphed over Napoleon at Waterloo and he never fought another battle. He lived on another 37 years, involving himself in the great political issues of the day and becoming, for a time. Prime Minister. He was a target not only for would-be assassins (the Cato Street Conspirators) but for the attentions of unmarried women of all kinds. He died in 1852 and was mourned as ' the greatest man that England ever knew.'
