Written by CHARLES OSBORNE
Meyer will be famous throughout his lifetime - and probably for ten years after his death, for he always pays in advance.
(HEINRICH HEINE)
Heine's contempt for Meyerbeer was shared by many of his contemporaries, including Berlioz and Wagner. But Meyerbeer's spectacular and tuneful operas were hugely successful with the Paris audiences for whom they were written. Now, after years of neglect, they are again being performed by the world's great singers.
This is an account of Meyerbeer's extraordinary career in the operatic capitals of Europe in the mid-19th century, with extracts from Les Huguenots, Le Prophete and L'Africaine sung by MARTINA ARROYO , LILY PONS. JOAN SUTHERLAND and others.
