England v Poland
England's World Cup fate could hang in the balance at Old Trafford in Manchester as they face Poland (kick-off 7.45) in their final Group Six qualifier.
If England defeated Austria last Saturday at this same venue, a similar result tonight will send them directly through to next summer's tournament in Germany. Anything less and Sven-Goran Eriksson 's men may face the unappealing prospect of a play-off.
The home side will be hoping for a repeat of the 2-1 win from the reverse game in Warsaw, with Spurs striker Jermain Defoe marking his first international start with a superbly taken goal. But no game against tonight's opponents can fail to mention the infamous night in 1973 when failure to beat the Poles at Wembley cost England a place in the World Cup finals.
