Portugal's festival of football comes to a climax as the two teams left after three weeks of searching soccer examinations battle it out for the Henri Delaunay trophy in the European championship final (kick-off 7.45).
Lisbon's magnificent 65,000-capacity Estadio da Luz will be ablaze with colour, but ones signifying which countries? The two most recent tournaments saw France and Germany emerge on top, both times via the golden-goal rule, but that's not to say that the favoured teams invariably prevail. In 1992, Denmark made it to the finals in Sweden only as substitutes after the late withdrawal of Yugoslavia. But the unfancied Scandinavians wrote their own fairy-tale story by going on to defeat Germany 2-0 in the final with a team featuring the likes of Peter Schmeichel, Brian Laudrup and John Jensen.
If the match goes to extra time, the silver-goal rule will apply. In this scenario, if one team is ahead at the end of the first extra-time period, that team is declared the winner. If the score is still level at the end of this first period - and also at the end of extra time - the winner is determined by penalty kicks. Gary Lineker presents all of the action.
