England v Romania
Live coverage from the Stade Communal at Charleroi in Belgium, as England play Romania in their final, and potentially decisive, Group A game (kickoff 7.45pm).
The last time the two sides met in a competitive fixture was in the group stage of the 1998 World Cup finals when a late goal by Chelsea's Dan Petrescu secured a 2-1 win for Romania. Liverpool's Michael Owen , coming on as a late substitute, announced his arrival on the world stage that night by scoring England's goal and then almost snatching a second equaliser in the dying seconds of the game.
Owen could figure alongside Alan Shearer in England's attack tonight, while Petrescu remains a key component in his side's defence, which conceded just three goals in ten qualifying matches. If fit, Romania's veteran playmaker Gheorghe Hagi is likely to cross swords once again with England centre-back Tony Adams. It was following a tussle with Adams that Hagi, playing for his club Galatasaray, was sent off during last month's Uefa Cup final against
Arsenal. The England defence will also have to be wary of the threat posed by Valencia striker Adrian Ilie - one of several players in the Romanian squad who play for Spanish clubs - who pilfered six goals in the qualifying matches.
Tonight's programme also includes highlights from
Rotterdam of the other Group A match between Germany and Portugal, which is being played at the same time as the England game. Introduced by Gary Lineker. A complete rerun of both games is at 12.30am. See Choice. (S) WEBSITE: www.bbc.co.uk/euro
