[Photo caption] Eve (Barbara Marten) must negotiate a moral maze before making her exit from Casualty
Drama: Casualty 8.05pm BBC1
A real three-hanky episode, this. First a couple of runaways have an accident and end up in Holby's A&E department. Two of their parents (Denise Black and Stuart Fox) have spent every weekend for the past three years searching the area, and - coincidentally - are involved in an accident themselves and also come into A&E. There may not be the tearful reunion the father was hoping for, but it may well get viewers snivelling. It's a story that continues into the next episode, as does the main story, which is the real hard-hitter emotionally. Eve's friend Gerry, who is critically ill with cancer, is brought to the hospital after he collapses; his final hours are spent in an A&E cubicle, where Eve finds it painfully hard to watch his suffering. Barbara Marten's portrayal of Eve's grief is so moving, it's hard to hold back the tears. On reflection, it's probably a four-hanky episode. (JR)
