Continuing the short series of Omnibus specials exploring one of British television's most popular genres.
A look at the golden age of the British sitcom and classics such as Fawlty Towers, The Liver Birds, Man about the House and The Good Life, which introduced some of the most memorable characters in sitcom.
Narrated by Julie Walters. See today's choices.
Laughter in the House: the Story of British Sitcom 10.00pm BBC1
Last week it was the sixties and Hancock's Half Hour, this week it is what the second of this Omnibus trilogy calls the golden age of the sitcom - the seventies. That includes everything from Love Thy Neighbour to The Liver Birds to The Good Life and all stops in between.
As black and white changed to colour so the sitcom reflected the changes in society, dealing with sex, racial prejudice and class snobbery.
What makes this series so compelling are the little bits of insider information dropped by the cast and authors. Listen to what Don Warrington (Philip from Rising Damp) thought of Love Thy Neighbour and what Andrew Sachs requested of John Cleese.
Obviously the most screen time is given over to the classics like Fawlty Towers while dated oldies like Terry and June are swept under the carpet.
This week Jonathan Ross casts a critical eye over
Robert Carlyle 's new film, Plunkett and Macleane, and the re-released
Robert Mitchum classic, Night of the Hunter. Plus John Travolta talks about his latest offering in the legal drama A Civil Action. Director David Council ; Producer
