A look at how the Ayatollah Khomeini's return to Tehran in 1979 triggered an Islamic fundamentalist revival that spread far beyond Iran. With the overthrow of the Shah, the onward march of western secular values was halted and as the revolution spread to other countries the reintroduction of sharia law brought with it the traditional punishments of the Koran. Throughout the Middle East, Africa and Asia, Islamic fundamentalism sought to provide answers to modern society's stresses and problems.
