This programme asks whether maintaining contact with both parents is always in the best interests of children whose families have broken up. With Joan Bakewell. See today's choices.

Heart of the Matter
10.25pm BBC 1 In Child Wars, the first programme in the new series, Joan Bakewell examines a problem that affects the lives of thousands of children.
As more and more marriages fail, many parents who are unable to agree end up in court in battles over access (known as "contact"). The received wisdom is that, for better or for worse, a child must retain contact with both its natural parents, however bad their history.
Since the child's welfare is the courts' paramount concern, how can the legal system justify imposing a penalty for defiance of this law?
