First of four films on what it means to be disabled.
Altered States. When PC Philip Olds was shot and paralysed, he couldn't face life in a wheelchair and vowed to walk again. The media took up his cause and he went to America in search of a miracle. Computers and electrodes helped him take a few steps, but nothing more. Severe depression and death soon followed. Perhaps, as some disabled people argue, the roots of such a tragedy lie not with the individual but in society's view of disability. Producer Tim Lambert
