When a new museum was opened in Barcelona in May 1990 to show the work of Antoni Tapies , he was finally recognised as the 'rightful heir to modern Spanish masters like Picasso and Miro'. In July he was awarded the most prestigious Spanish arts prize, the Premio Prfncipe de Asturias, won last year by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This month he will receive the Japanese Imperial Art Prize, equivalent in stature to the Nobel
