Crack Crisis - Is Britain Next? Crack - the drug which President Bush says is turning American cities into battle zones - is now starting to appear on some British streets too. Last April one of President Bush's top advisers warned that Britain could have a similar epidemic to
New York within three years. The Americans say the posses - Jamaican gangs who have been called the most violent organised criminals since the 20s - may try to create a crack market here. But those warnings have been greeted with dismay by drug agencies who fear the dangers of crack are being hyped. They say the dealers are unlikely to gain a permanent foothold in Britain.
With access to confidential documents, Panorama has learnt the identity of leading posse members with links to this country. As the first police Crack Squad begins work in Scotland Yard, Panorama accompanies American and British detectives as they track the dealers down, and films those most affected by crack - from newborn babies in New York to a young British couple who fear their own baby will be a crack addict.
Steve Bradshaw reports from New York, the American Midwest and London on the true dangers of crack and the dealers' chances of extending their empire across the Atlantic.
