The first of two programmes The Years of Courage
He is the little Campa Indian boy who captured the hearts of the nation when his story was told on TV five years ago. He also captured the hearts of the surgeon who rebuilt his face and the surgeon's wife, Marjorie, who became his mother and helped him build a new life in America. David was found by Ian Jackson , the distinguished plastic surgeon from Scotland, virtually abandoned in a hospital in Lima, Peru. The centre of his face had been destroyed by disease. Ian began, first in Scotland then in the Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota, the near impossible task of using bits of David's own body to reconstruct a face.
Marjorie began a search for David's roots, which meant trekking through the Amazonian jungle and a desperate fight to adopt the boy they wanted to protect and had learned to love.
