In this country we are not good at facing up to death. One woman,
Dr Sheila Cassidy , is in the forefront of the movement to change our attitudes. The hospice she helped to found, St Luke 's in Plymouth, is a place of happiness - and love.
She herself has turned her medical vocation into a new dimension. She is part of a new breed of doctors and nursing staff who care when they know they cannot cure. Working with the poor in Chile, Sheila was arrested and tortured by the secret police for treating a man with a leg-wound who - unknown to her - was on the political wanted list. Now she has moved from the parish of the poor to the parish of the dying. Researcher AILEEN WILD
