The Arts and Glasnost
The first of three films about the cultural changes in Gorbachev's Russia. Cinema
In 1917 Lenin wrote that cinema is the most important of the arts. Today the reform of the cinema is at the centre of the perestroika - or reconstruction - currently taking place in Soviet society.
At this year's International
Film Festival in Moscow, the world was given the opportunity to see 150 films which had been suppressed over the last 20 years.
In this week's Omnibus, Soviet directors like
Elem Klimov and Alexei Gherman talk publicly for the first time about the frustrations of working under censorship: 'to make a film was bad enough ... but to get it approved was indescribable' - and speak about their hopes and fears for the future.
