Alfred Perks , Jack-of-all-trades
Alfred Perks, farmer and wheel-wright, has been kept so busy by his neighbours in Shropshire that in 30 years he has never been away from his workshop for more than two days at a time. He mends their carts, barns and water-wheels, repairs the jumps on the racecourse, refits the pews in the chapel, looks after the church clock and dispatches the dead in coffins wrought by his own fastidious hand.
