A Risk Business Special
Ten years ago tonight, Britain's proudest company crashed into bankruptcy. It was a shock that rocked the entire nation. Since those dark days of 1971, the phoenix appears to have risen from the ashes. Thanks to the RB211 and a portfolio of advanced jet engines, backed by the efforts of its sales teams, Rolls-Royce is now a billion-pounds-a-year business, competing on equal terms with its American rivals.
But the Government has poured £400-million of aid into Rolls-Royce in the last ten years, and the company hasn't made significant profits since the bankruptcy - last year it announced a record loss and in the last few weeks Rolls have suffered record disappointments in the market place.
The Risk Business examines the cut-throat international world of jet engine companies, and asks whether Rolls-Royce will continue to need Government support to stay in that market-or whether the next ten years will produce the kind of profits that will justify the rescue of ten years ago.
