Irish Unity - the Only Answer? The Panorama Debate
Presented by David Dimbleby
At the heart of all the troubles over Northern Ireland lies this question: is Ireland one country or two? At the moment, the Republic's Prime Minister, Charles Haughey , is engaged in a new diplomatic campaign to convince the British government that the only way to end the violence is to unify Ireland. Mrs Thatcher remains unconvinced. Who is right? Tonight Panorama cameras visit the Cambridge Union for a debate on the motion that ' The declared long-term aim of British policy in Ireland should be Irish unity'. Speaking in favour are Jack Lynch , Prime Minister of the Irish Republic until last year, and John Hume , leader of the Northern Irish Social and Democratic Labour Party Against will be The Rt Hon William Craig , former Minister of Home Affairs in the Stormont Government, and Conor Cruise O'Brien, former Irish cabinet minister, now editor-in-chief of the Observer.
