An Inside Story documentary
On 7 September 1940 Hurricanes of 257 Squadron took off from Martlesham Heath , Suffolk, to intercept a large wave of enemy bombers over the Thames estuary, heading towards London on what turned out to be the first day of the London Blitz. Among those lost in the battle was Flt-Lt H. R. A. Beresford. No one saw him shot down. He was posted as ' missing ' until September 1979 when the wreckage of a fighter was found ... This documentary pieces together the sad story of Beresford's last mission, finally concluded 40 years after the Battle of Britain.
An outstanding programme of the weekend ... last night's haunting, perceptive and eye-opening Inside Story.

for Remembrance Sunday from Cannock, Staffordshire
Introduced by Geoffrey Wheeler
For the people who stood at the war memorial in the small town of Cannock in Staffordshire this morning, today is something more than a national festival of Remembrance. It's the time for them, and for millions of others all over Britain, to pay personal and often very painful respect to sons or fathers or perhaps the friends with whom they went to war - and who never returned.
O God our help (St Anne); O praise ye (Laudate Dominum); Abide with me (Eventide); When morning gilds (Laudes Domini); And did those feet (Jerusalem); O valiant hearts (Ellers); Where have all the flowers gone?: Creator of the earth and skies (Breslau)

A million men and women of the British Empire, killed on active service in the Great War, are buried in the countries where they died.
