by George Eliot; dramatised in eight parts by James Andrew Hall starring Ray Smith as Mr Tulliver, Judy Cornwell as Bessy Tulliver with Jonathan Scott-Taylor as Tom and Georgia Slowe as Maggie
Maggie Tulliver, the miller's daughter who defies her embittered brother and shocks the Victorian society in which she lives by following the dictates of her heart, is one of George Eliot's most memorable creations. Drama, romance, tragedy, humour - Maggie's relations are often very funny - all have a place in this most popular of her novels.

Introduced by Cliff Michelmore
The Holiday programme is back in its familiar Sunday spot, heralding a series that provides advice and information, film reports from resorts at home and abroad, and expert comment in the studio.
The objective, as before, is to inform viewers about latest holiday trends, about developments that might affect their choice of destination, and about the value, comfort and standard of service they will get for their money.
This first programme has John Carter sampling one sector of a multi-destination coach tour, travelling through Hungary, Yugo-, slavia and Italy. In contrast, Kieran Prendiville reports from a winter sunshine resort in Morocco.

The film starring Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison with Stanley Holloway, Wilfrid Hyde White
Gladys Cooper, Jeremy Brett, Theodore Bikel

This delightful musical version of Shaw's play "Pygmalion", in which Eliza Doolittle is transformed from Cockney flower-seller to elegant lady, is truly Hollywood at its lavish best. With a host of hit songs and no fewer than eight Academy Awards, the film is a constant and enduring pleasure for all the family.
Outside Covent Garden Opera House, Henry Higgins, professor of phonetics, boasts to his friend Pickering that he could teach a Cockney flower-girl to speak like a duchess. The next morning, to his astonishment, Eliza turns up at his house, demanding that he make good his boast. Higgins rises to the challenge ...

Screenplay by Alan Jay Lerner from his own musical play based on Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion"
